During the immersion part of the school day, the curriculum is taught in the immersion language. Students are learning their content knowledge through the immersion language. The language is the vehicle of instruction and not the target of instruction. Language and content are learned together. At least 60% of the students’ day is taught in the target language.

Students comprehend and process 100% of their school day in the same way they would if it were conducted in English. They do not begin to speak in the target language immediately much in the same way they learned their first language. Comprehension and language production is not a translation exercise from English into the target language. Your child will start by answering the academic questions in English when asked in the target language. Expect that your student will first produce memorized phrases, such as songs, numbers, and days of the week. Then your child will begin to produce lists and chunks of phrases. Your child will speak in independent sentences during year two of immersion. Your child will speak in detailed paragraph like explanations in the target language in year three.
